City puts on symposium to mark war end anniversary

Folks here in Manassas and around the nation have been celebrating the anniversary of the final year of the American Civil War. The Northern Virginia’s regional capstone event of the Virginia Civil War’s 150th Commemoration will take place in the middle of next month.

The occasion will be an ‘After the War Symposium: A One-Day Symposium on the Effects of the Civil War’. This will be a look at the end of the war and its effects on the nation.

The event will be sponsored by Prince William County, Prince William County Historic Commission, the Prince William’s Historic Preservation Division., and the City of Manassas.

Six speakers are slated, with Bert Dunkerly giving a speech about ‘Surrender of the Confederate Armies’, George Wunderlich discussing the Post-war Effects on Southern Soldiers, and Emmanuel Dabney talking about the Freedman’s Bureau. The other speeches will be Dr. Jane Censer’s ‘Women during the Reconstruction’, John Coski’s ‘Confederate Battle Flag’, and John Hennessy discussing ‘Civil War Memory’.

The event requires reservations, with tickets priced at $10 per person and available at the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division. Civil War buffs still have plenty of time to get some flyer printing carried out to promote the event.

The symposium will be held May 16, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Old Manassas Courthouse on Lee Avenue.
