UVU to hold young people jazz festival
Local Orem jazz music lovers and young artists are in for a treat this month, as Director Dr. David Fullmer, Director of Bands, and Utah Valley Performing Arts hosts an annual Icebreaker Jazz Festival.
This daylong event showcases local junior high school and high school bands giving performances in a noncompetitive environment.
This festival was created to allow budding jazz artists the rewarding experience of performing in front of a live audience, allowing musicians to learn from and enjoy listening to the other groups. The public is invited to watch and listen.
For those participating, 20-minute clinics will be conducted after each performance, followed by a guest judge who will critique each one. Group photos will be taken after their performance. Directors may want to take the pictures to local printing services to get copies for each participating student.
A performance disc will be given to each group after the photo session. Instrumental groups will be provided with timpani, chimes, marimba, xylophone, bass drum, and a piano. Chorale groups will be provided, with a piano, risers, and a sound shell. Also, the UVU Jazz Ensemble will give a performance at noon, and an evening concert.
The festival will be held all day Monday November 24, at the Utah Valley University Ragan Theater, 800 West University Parkway, Orem.
