Handbell concert set to ring in
Soon, Orem locals will get a chance to enjoy the musical evening with the Utah Valley Handbell Ringers, a group of 15 volunteers who have banded together to play songs using nothing but handbells. The concert will feature a variety of holiday-themed tunes played on 56 bells.
Handbells are made of bronze or aluminum and, as the name suggests, are held in the hand. Each member typically holds two, and each of the bells rings out a different note. Songs are composed by synchronizing performers ringing their bell at just the right moment. A member will at times put down a bell or two and pick up another to allow for playing more notes. The group will also give a talk on handbells and answer any questions attendees may have.
The choir got its start back in 1993 thanks to director Karen-Eskew-Wyllie. Since that time, the membership has changed but the goal of bringing handbell music to the Utah Valley has not.
Those who plan to attend may want to listen to some handbell music prior to the concert to get some background on how it all works, and perhaps mention the group when arranging holiday newsletter printing. Handbell fan can also get some flyer printing done and distribute material to get the word out.
The free concert will be given at 7:00 pm on December 10 at Orem Public Library.
