Brazilian Festival celebrates 16th year

Utah Brazilian Festival 2020 is scheduled for mid-September.

The free event has been created to celebrate and share Brazilian culture, its people, food and the Portuguese language.

This year, as has been the tradition, the event will open at 1:00 pm with the Samba Opening Dance Presentation. Everyone will be invited to take part, and learn the dance as they participate. Costumes will be provided for those who want them. Some groups wear matching T-shirts sporting their group’s graphic design.

Other Brazilian dances will also be part of the event. Guests can look for the Jongo (an early form of the Samba), Bumba Meu Boi (a theatrical dance), and Forro (a couple’s dance). Male performers will be doing the dance-like Capoeira, which is a combination of acrobatics, dance and martial arts.

Vendors will be selling only authentic Brazilian arts, crafts and cuisine. Merchandise vendors will be putting their logo design on colorful festival caps, T-shirts, banners, and posters.

Festival attendees will get to purchase Brazilian cuisine such as coxinhas (shredded chicken teardrop croquettes), feijoada (black beans), and churros. Deserts include brigadeiro (chocolate truffle), pao de mel (honey cake sandwich), and passion fruit mousse.

The festival is hosted by Orem’s Viva Brazil Cultural Center, a nonprofit with a mission to educate the public about Brazil and to connect the Brazilian community members residing both in and outside Utah.

Utah Brazilian Festival 2020 will be Saturday, September 12 from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Orchard, 575 East University Parkway.
