Stone Oak restaurant branches out downtown

‘Smoke’, a popular barbecue restaurant located on Sonterra Boulevard in the Stone Oak neighborhood, is taking over the Ruth’s Chris Steak House on Commerce Street in San Antonio’s downtown.

Chef Brian West said people came from downtown to eat at the Stone Oak location, so it seemed logical to open a spot nearer to them. However, West says, the heart of the operation will still be the Stone Oak location. Employees will all be trained there, and he wanted to clarify that he is not moving downtown, but simply extending the operation to an additional venue.

The downtown restaurant will feature a private dining space, and some pricier items for those who want something special. The steakhouse’s wine cellar will become a cocktail bar, with Olaf Harmel, a veteran bartender, heading the effort.

West says the bar will have a “San Antonio feel”, and draws parallels from rock-and-roll legends. The up-and-coming bar in San Antonio, according to West, is the Paramour, which is comparable to the Beatles. Metaphorically, he wants his place to be the Rolling Stones.

West is hoping to have the downtown Smoke location open by February 1, 2016, with the bar going into operation soon after.

West might work with a printer to create fun, festive Banners to hang in the downtown Smoke to celebrate its opening.
