San Antonio welcomes new bar serving craft beers

The Hoppy Monk, a brewery based in El Paso, recently opened a new location in San Antonio.

The bar has 99 beers on tap. Ricardo Ruiz, who manages the new bar, says another 120 beers, this time in bottles, will soon be added to the list.

The Monk also has a full liquor license, enabling it to serve about 100 various types of hard liquor, though it tends to emphasize single-malt scotch, and American craft whiskey.

The Hoppy Monk will also serve food. Although the menu isn't final yet, the kitchen will take an “artisanal approach” to the usual bar fare, serving items like a cheeseburger made with aged cheddar cheese, along with aioli and onion jam made in the bar’s kitchen.

Although there are television sets in the Monk and Ruiz plans to televise games, the place is not being marketed as a sports bar. Ruiz says that live entertainment will be booked during holidays throughout the year.

The Hoppy Monk is located at 1010 North Loop 1604 and plans to open from 3:00 pm to 2:00 am Tuesday through Friday, and 11:30 am to 2:00 am weekends. It will be closed on Mondays.

Ruiz could work with a banner printing company to create a banner for above the door to celebrate the opening and grab attention.
