H-E-B opens new San Antonio store

H-E-B, the supermarket chain based in San Antonio, recently opened a location in the Alamo Ranch area of the city. This is the second new store the company has opened in the city during 2017.

The new store, which offers 93,000 square feet, is on Alamo Ranch Parkway, and will offer a curbside pickup service, which lets shoppers place online orders and pick them up later. The curbside option reflects the way in which brick-and-mortar stores are trying to match the convenience of online shopping, and H-E-B has expanded this service from 22 stores to 82 in seven months.

There is a fee of $4.95 for the curbside service, but the company waives it for a shopper's first four visits. Julie Bedingfield, an H-E-B spokeswoman, said curbside pickup will probably appeal most to those who are really in a time crunch, while others will enjoy browsing through the store itself.

It takes training for the store to be able to run curbside pickup, since it means all employees have to be familiar with the entire store, including the deli, seafood, and produce departments. Everyone has to be able to serve customers wherever they are, so that no one has to wait an excessively long time in any department.

When new stores like this open, managers can create a celebration by distributing Promotional Products to early shoppers as a thank you for visiting.
