Planos green spaces earn top spot in North Texas

A recent list created by a not for profit group rated the park system in Plano as being among the best in the country.

Trust for Public Lands looked at the parks in 100 of the

country’s largest cities, and Plano took the top spot for North Texas, and 17th spot for the whole of the US.

The ParkScore system uses three criteria to create its list. Firstly, it looks at the amount of land that is used for public green spaces, how accessible they are to users and how much money is used to support them and the amenities they offer. The system only ranks public parks and not private ones.

According to the organization, Plano earned such a high place because the parks tend to be large with a median size of 13.3 acres. This is over twice what is typical in many other cities. Another factor that was considered is that 74 percent of the people who live in the city are within close proximity to a green space. For these residents, a walk of just 10 minutes will allow them to reach a park. Again, this is well above the national average. A city can use rankings such as this on the Brochures and other items it uses to promote itself to people and businesses that may be considering relocating to the community.
