McAllen organ donation symposium offered for healthcare professionals

Organ donation can, quite literally, be the gift of life. Those who work in the healthcare field, whether it’s as a nurse, social worker, chaplain, or in another position, may wish to be part of a McAllen symposium that will explore the process of organ and tissue donation and the best practices involved.

The daylong conference, which has been made possible by the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, will be interactive and include a panel of both organ donor families and recipients. Breakfast and lunch are included, and there is no cost to register.

The symposium will focus on a variety of topics, and these include a review of Joint Commission Standards and CMS/UAGA regulations. The attendees will also learn about the referral process, the concerns families of a donor may have, and how to approach the subject to a family in crisis. Finally, there will be a discussion of management practices for the donor patient, brain death, and donation following circulatory death.

Those who wish participate in this learning opportunity are asked to register ahead of time, and check-in starts at 8:00 am. Promotional Pens and other swag for a function like this can be prepared by an area Print company.

The Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen has planned this offering for May 2. It will run from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm.
