The railroad comes to town
In common with many communities, the growth of McAllen was spurred by the arrival of the railroad. The area around what would become McAllen was settled in 1904, and was mostly rural and agricultural. At that time, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway arrived, and John McAllen, along with his son James, donated land for the railroad to use, provided it would stay in the area. In December of that year, a group of businessmen, including McAllen, formed the McAllen Townsite Company, and the new settlement was named McAllen, to honor John McAllen for negotiating to bring the railroad to the community.
McAllen takes great pride in its past, and formed the McAllen Heritage Center in 2006 to provide a central location where people can learn about the city's history. Growth and development
McAllen remained fairly small until the second half of the 20th century.
