Houston hike harnesses laughters healing power

The old adage that laughter is the best medicine is the inspiration behind an event that will help to make sure no veteran gets left behind.

Houston vets are invited to add their name to the list of those who will be taking part in the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike, which harnesses the healing power of humor. It is restricted to former military members as well as those who are currently serving, reservists, and those in the National Guard.

The registrants for the hike will gather at Holler Brewing Co. before they head out, and boots and a weighted rucksack, as well as combat boots, are optional. Documented service animals are welcome, and while silkies are the official garb for the activity, they are not required. Everyone is reminded to bring cash as well as sunscreen, and snacks and hydration are also recommended along with an extra pair of socks in case one gets wet.

The event’s online listing clarifies that patriotic, unit, and branch badges may be displayed during the hike, but political and religious messages are not allowed. A banner printing company can prepare items to carry or display during a walk or run to help raise awareness of the cause being supported.

The Houston installment of the Irreverent Warriors Silkies Hike initiative will hit the road on Tuesday, October 1. Everyone is asked to arrive at 2206 Edwards Street by no later than 7:00 am.
