While most people are familiar with honeybees, they are an introduced species, and the Houston Botanic Garden has scheduled a learning activity that will explore their native cousins.
Bees are in the Hymenoptera insect family, and there are many native species that call Texas home. The “Gardening for Native Bees’ learning session will introduce these industrious insects and why they are so important, and both members and non-members may register. A discount will be available to those with a Garden membership.
The facilitator for the class will discuss how native bee species differ from European honeybees, and what they need to be healthy and happy will be reviewed. The attendees will find out which flowers attract pollinators the most, and tips for making a yard “bee friendly” will be provided. At the end of the classroom portion of the activity, the learners will head out to the Garden so they can view bees outdoors, and a free plant will be distributed to each participant. Notebooks and water bottles are recommended.
Learning how to support nature can be an important step in living a more sustainable lifestyle. A brochure printing company can prepare full color learning materials for an activity.
This chance to learn about the importance of native bees will be on offer on April 12th. It will start at 2:00 pm, and it will be delivered in English.
