The expansion of the United Airlines terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport has now begun.
The new technical operations center, expected to cost $162m by its completion in 2018, is being created in partnership with the Houston Airport System and the City of Houston. The airport is adjacent to the community of Humble.
According to Greg Hart, chief operations officer and executive vice president at United, the investment in the new Houston facility will support employees who work both in Houston and throughout the worldwide operations of United. The new facility will cover 200,000 square feet, and will make room for wider aircraft than what is currently available. This will include Boeing 767s, 777s, 797s, and the Airbus A350s. The new work environment will provide a safer and more ergonomic situation for support personnel and maintenance technicians with United.
The new facility will also consolidate United’s maintenance facilities in Houston, as well as providing administrative offices and a warehouse distribution center. The new facility is also expected to generate up to 200 new jobs. During construction, many companies invest in banner printing to advertise construction companies or make onlookers aware of safe and unsafe areas.
Sylvester Turner, mayor of Houston, said that this new facility was evidence of Houston’s quality as a business community, and spoke about how the community wanted to see United succeed in its new ventures.
