Houston Zoo recently welcomed the newest member into its family.
A baby was born to one of the four female Masai giraffes that reside in the institution. The calf entered the world at around 7:45 pm on August 31, and weighed in at about 160 pounds. At birth, many giraffes are already over six feet tall, and this new little one was no exception, as she measured six feet and three inches in height.
Her mother was pregnant with her for 15 months, which is typical for her species, and zoo officials expressed their delight at finally being able to meet her.
The honor of naming the baby went to zoo board member Jim Postl, who was the successful bidder for the naming rights during a live auction held as part of the 2015 Zoo Ball. The name he selected was “Gigi”, which translates to “girl giraffe”.
Reports form those looking after her indicate that both she and her mother are doing well and are bonding together. Having the opportunity to see a baby giraffe can be a big draw to the public, and a poster printing firm can use a photo of her on the Posters and other promotional materials they produce for the zoo.
Gigi adds to the world population of this species, which has been dropping in recent years. It is estimated that only around 80,000 of them are left in the world.
