Several events are taking over midtown Houston next month to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The first parade taking place is the 11th annual MLK Youth Parade on January 14 beginning at 12:00 PM. Over 200,000 spectators are expected to attend.
There are set to be 10 floats and 20 marching bands participating in the parade, which will begin at San Jacinto and Elgin Streets, travel down San Jacinto and end up at Webster Street. The announcers will be Jammin’ Jimmy Olson, Misty, and H2.
The next day will feature the 16th MLK Battle of the Bands at W. W. Thorne Stadium from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. Over 20 marching bands from all over the country will be competing; those confirmed include bands from Arkansas, Texas, and California. They will be judged in three categories: small, medium and large. Admission is $12 for spectators.
The 23rd MLK Grande Parade will take place on Martin Luther King Day starting at 10:00 AM. It will travel the same route as the youth parade. This parade will feature 15 floats and 30 marching bands. The announcers are Johhny B and Van Won.
It is likely that the participants in the parades will be carrying Banners to identify themselves. Some of these may be provided by a Houston printing company.
