Houston venue to host introduction to indigo

The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft offers the public a variety of learning opportunities, and one that will take place in May will introduce the art of indigo dyeing.

The Center will be offering the chance to learn the basics of working with indigo dyes, and everyone will prepare their own handkerchief to keep. Molly Koehn and a group of volunteers will facilitate the activity, which will be held outdoors.

Indigo, which is one of the oldest plant-based dyes still in use today, can produce a vivid blue color, and everyone can watch the transformation once their cloth has been dipped into the dye vat. As the indigo oxidizes, it will turn a bright blue.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to view three different sources for this plant-based dye in the venue’s garden. There is no charge to take part and all ages are welcome.

A class or workshop that offers the opportunity to work with textiles can be a lot of fun, and it may spark an interest in those who take part. A poster printing company can offer a variety of ways for a not-for-profit group or other organizers to spread the word about an upcoming event.

This introduction to the art of working with indigo is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 4.
