The city of Houston is once again celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. next month. There are three separate events taking place to recognize the civil rights leader.
The first of them will be the 12th annual MLK Youth Parade on January 13 from 12:00 to 1:30pm in Midtown Houston. Over 100 groups from all over the United States are set to participate. There will be 20 award-winning marching bands, including the Stephen F. Austin High School and the Huntington High School Marching Bands, and 10 floats. The announcers for this year include Jammin’ Jimmy Olson.
The following day, the Battle of the Bands competition takes place at W. W. Thorne Stadium beginning at 4:00 PM. The competition is set to include 20 bands including Ortiz Middle School. Tickets are $12 each.
Rounding off the celebrations will be the 24th annual MLK Grand Parade on January 15 from 10:00pm to 12:00 noon. Over 30,000 spectators are expected to turn out to see the 15 floats, 150 performing groups, and 30 marching bands. Among the local groups expected to perform will be the University of Houston Marching Band and the PVAMU Marching Band.
