Southwest Airlines flies high thanks to new travel award

TripAdvisor recently released its Travelers’ Choice Awards, and has named Dallas-based Southwest Airlines to be the best in its category.

Southwest Airlines landed in the lofty No. 1 spot among U.S. and North America’s best airlines and North America’s best economy carriers, as well as its best low-cost carriers. Several Lone Star State hotels ranked well in the region too.

This will be the 18th year for the annual awards, which in addition to airlines also ranks hotels and restaurants. Ryan Green, Southwest’s chief marketing officer and senior vice president, responded to the announcement with a press release saying:

“Awards such as these highlight our passion, which is to connect people to what's important in their lives with low fares, world-renowned hospitality, and customer-friendly policies.”

Business awards are not something companies keep to themselves; more often than not, printing services are instructed to include mention of the award in the company's advertisements and literature.

Southwest Airlines got its start in 1967 under the name Air Southwest. Herb Kelleher, the airline’s founder, envisioned his planes flying exclusively in Texas, connecting Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. Air Southwest became Southwest Airlines in 1971. Following the airline industry’s deregulation in the late 1970s, Southwest Airlines grew to become one of the world’s largest airlines, and according to TripAdvisor, the current best.
