Recently the Landmark Commission has approved a public hearing on whether the process of providing the building at 1618 Main Street with an historic designation should be pursued. Neiman Marcus has not revealed any plans it may have for the site other than it will be closing the store in September.

In a letter supporting historical designation, a Landmark Commissioner Jason Harper stated:
“This iconic building holds deep historical, architectural, and cultural significance to the city of Dallas, the State of Texas, and the broader United States, making it deserving of recognition and protection under local, state, and national preservation programs.”
Once it was announced that the Neiman Marcus store would close, a local campaign to keep it open was launched but this proved unsuccessful.
For over a century the store, which dealt in high-end luxury items, had been part of the city’s heart and a place of local pride to the community. It is hoped that a historic designation would help preserve the building by potentially creating incentives for redevelopment. However, it could also present challenged, since the designation would also limit changes that could be made to the structure.
