Ben Peckham, Dat Tran, and Akhil Peddikuppa, all students at Dallas ISD’s School for the Talented and Gifted (TAG), along with Vedant Tapiavala, a DISD graduate and current Dartmouth College freshmen, created the app to assist food banks and pantries. The mobile app links organizations with the mission to distribute food to the needy with businesses that have extra food.
Even non-profits need promoting and utilize Stationery printers for their Letterheads, and to produce Brochures to help them raise funds.
FoodNex works in a similar way to a dating app, connecting those with food to donate with groups that need food for distribution to the hungry. Peckham explained that 119 billion pounds of food is wasted in this country each year, primarily due to its approaching expiration date. He explained the app’s potential to nbcdfw.com:
"If we could just reroute that food to the people who needed it, that could easily end food insecurity."
FoodNex received funding assistance from Dartmouth College, and so far, the app has enabled approximate 70,000 pounds of food in North Texas, Minneapolis and the San Francisco Bay Area to be saved and distributed.
The students hope to build on the success of the app and wish to scale it for use nationwide.
