Progress is being made, but the first food hall for Providence is still a year away from becoming a reality in the city’s historic Union Station.
Recently the board of directors for the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation unanimously approved redeemable tax credits in the amount of $1m to One Union Station LLC. The money is for the planned redevelop of the city’s old train station’s ground floor into a food hall. The source of the tax credits will be the Rebuild Rhode Island Tax Credit program.
Banner printing services are often called upon while a project is still underway to help build excitement for its eventual completion.
The still unnamed project was announced by Marsella Development Corp. in March 2021. The company purchased bought Union Station from the Rhode Island Foundation and the upper floors of the property are still occupied by the foundation and its tenants.
The scope of the project has been reduced from its original proposed 19,000 square feet to 17,000 square feet with a reduction in cost from $22.8m to $19.5m. The finished development is expected to include an extra 10,000 square feet in an outdoor plaza seven local merchants, a central bar, vendor carts, and seating for 300.
The demolition phase of the project is now complete, and construction should be fully underway by summer. The food hall is expected to be operational in Spring 2024.
