RIPA presents Providence paper with 29 awards

It was a stellar night for The Providence Journal and staff as they were presented with 29 awards, nine of which were for first place at the annually editorial contest held by the Rhode Island Press Association (RIPA).

In total 151 awards were handed out by RIPA at its recent dinner and awards celebration. Over 125 were in attendance, the highest since before the pandemic; additionally, submissions for the awards were up as well, from last year’s total of 619 to 659 in 2026.

Organizations that win awards often choose printing services to help advertise the fact.

RIPA, representing news outlets throughout Rhode Island, used the opportunity of its awards event to induct four journalists into the Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame.

Honored for their lifetime contributions to journalism at the local level were:

Bruce Butterfield, who was twice a Pulitzer Prize finalist who attained a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard and an Associated Press Managing Editors Award for Public Service.

Jim Hummel, who spent 44 years in journalism, 13 or which were with The Providence Journal, going from beat reporter in a small town to pioneering a novel form of investigative journalism.

Alan Rosenberg, who with over 40 years at The Providence Journal donned almost every editorial hat at the paper, rose from covering local news to become its executive editor.

Shelia L. Mullowney’s, who career covered 25 years and three states, climbing the ladder from beat reporter to The Newport Daily News’ executive director.
