Providence Capital Improvement Plan to receive $150 million

A recent decision by Providence City Council to give the go-ahead to the city’s Capital Improvement Plan means that almost $150 million will be spent on infrastructure improvements ranging from city parks to city buildings.

According to Providence Mayor Brett Smiley nearly $50 million of the $148.5 million allotted for the capital improvements will be spent on a new garage to house vehicles for the Department of Public Works. Smiley explained:

"The current DPW garage is actually being held up with temporary bracing, it is well past its useful life. We have tens of millions of dollars' worth of equipment that we own, big trucks, street sweepers."

Flyer printing services provide an affordable way for city governments to keep their residents informed.

In addition to the $50 million for a new garage, another sizable portion of the money will go toward City Hall improvements, beginning with a new roof. Beyond that money will be spent on upgrades to streets, city parks and sidewalks. The city’s sidewalk situation being of particular concern as children walking to school, mothers navigating strollers, elderly residents and the disabled using motorized wheelchairs and scooters all have a stake in safe sidewalks.

Commenting on the work to be accomplished with the nearly $150 million allotted, Mayor Smiley explained that while the updates to the city’s infrastructure will not take place overnight, he believes that by the end of five years each park within the city will have been renovated.
