Anchor sculptures linked to Providences new walking trail

Colorful anchor sculptures scattered about downtown Providence are part of the city’s new interactive walking trail designed to share the local culture and history in the community’s public spaces.

Under the theme, “You Belong Here”, a collaborative effort of the city and the Downtown Providence Park Network is overseeing the installation of 200 lamppost Banners and five anchors throughout the downtown area. A map of the walking loop along with nearby landmarks and tidbits of local history as well businesses that might be of interest are available at the anchors.

Park network Executive Director Nora Barré explained:

“A lot of tourists, and even locals here, don’t know that these spaces are connected. I thought the most symbolic piece of art that could really talk about Providence and pay homage to our port and maritime history was an anchor.”

Banner printing services offer several types of Banners including those that can feature a full-colored portrait.

Following its completion in September each spot will feature a QR code to scan providing additional information as well as news of upcoming events. Moreover, Rhode Island-themed music will play via hand-crank-powered anchors. A certainty among the musician’s whose music will be featured will be RI homeowner Taylor Swift.

Among the goals of the project, it to enlighten the public about lesser-known local history, thereby supporting the theme of belonging. Many of those featured on the Banners are female or people of color whose contribution may have escaped notice.
