According to the RI Department of Environmental Management (DEM), the program is designed to assist state residents in lowering their bills, as well as saving energy, via the strategic planting of trees near their homes.
In a press release, DEM Director Terry Gray said:
"From an environmental perspective, planting a tree in the right place can improve air quality, capture and store carbon, and help manage stormwater runoff."
This will be the 13th year for the program, which gives away trees twice a year. In addition to the DEM, the program is sponsored by Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, The Rhode Island Tree Council, and the Arbor Day Foundation, with funding supplied by the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Government organizations as well as private companies often utilize decals provided by Print shops.
Tree pickup will be offered at several locations during September and October. A variety of tree species will be available, with that have the potential to grow over 50 feet, some between 30 and feet, and some no more than 30 feet. Planted in three-gallon containers, the trees will be around four to six feet tall at their current height. People can register and sign up for a tree at the Arbor Day website.
