State incentive for Providence to switch leaf blowers

The state of Rhode Island wants to discourage the use of gas-powered leaf blowers in favor of electric blowers and consequently will be incentivizing landscape companies in Providence and other towns to switch.

In addition to their contribution to air pollution, gas-powered leaf blowers are also noticeably louder than their electric counterparts, making their use problematic, in Providence and other areas of the state. The noise issue can be particularly irksome on weekend mornings; however, replacing them can be costly for business owners. For this reason, the state is offering to pay the less of 50 percent of either the cost of a new leaf blower or $1,000 to commercial landscapers that wish to make the purchase.

Small businesses use a variety of methods to market themselves including flyer printing services.

Qualifications for taking advantage of this program include having a business that utilizes leaf blowers and is registered in Rhode Island. Nonprofits, government agencies and private residents need not apply. Purchases must be made after November 21 and the deadline for applications is June 30, 2025. There is a limit of two rebates per business.

Businesses within areas with high rates of asthma can receive an extra $250. According to the Rhode Island Department of Health, businesses in the following communities qualify for the additional funds: Woonsocket, Westerly, Providence, Pawtucket and Central Falls.
