Rt. 113 traffic woes may affect Providence commuters

Upcoming preparations for the replacement of overpass bridges for I-95 and I-295 on East Avenue in Warwick, also known as Route 113, will result in delays for the next few months for Warwick and Providence residents who commute between the two cities.

Motorists can expect a partial closure on East Avenue between the Route 5 intersection and the Knight campus of Community College of Rhode Island’s main entrance. While ramps will remain open, traffic in each direction will be reduced to one lane each direction along with entrance and exit lanes for those getting on and off the interstates.

Many businesses as well as city offices turn to Print shops for maps to provide stakeholders with alternative routes.

The purpose of the lane closures is so that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation can prepare for the replacement of the two bridges that pass over the interstates. Replacement of the bridges, which have been deemed “structurally deficient” will continue through to the end of the year.

Once the initial preparations are complete phase I of the actual bridge replacements will begin in the spring with traffic being moved onto the bridges eastbound side so the demolition and rebuilding of the other side can start. Phase II will take place between summer and fall on the bridges’ other side.

By the end of 2025 the bridges, which carry as many as 33,000 vehicles a day, are expected to return to their original arrangement
