Rhode Island among best states to raise a family

Families looking to relocate to a state with better schools, more family-friendly activities, better jobs, and health services should consider taking a good look at Providence and wider Rhode Island, which has been ranked 11th out of 50 states for best places to raise a family.

WalletHub, a personal finance website, comparing 50 states across several areas to come to its decision, and determined Massachusetts to be the top place for raising a family. Several other New England states ranked highly on list as well.

Chambers of commerce are quick to send favorable results of studies such as this to printing services for inclusion in their promotional materials.

The categories in which the states were rated included family fun, affordability, health and safety, and socioeconomics, broken down into 51 key indicators. The top state, Massachusetts, rated particularly high on family fun and affordability.

The other high-ranking New England states were Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut and Rhode Island in 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th place respectively.

The best possible overall score was 100, and Massachusetts achieved 66.14. Rhode Island‘s score was 56.95 with its strongest categories being health and safety, and affordability, where the state came in 4th place in each. The Ocean State garnered 19th place for education and childcare, and 27th place for family fun.

At the bottom of the list, representing the worst place to raise a family was Mississippi, with an overall score of 30.01.
