Providence to use $255K grant for food waste reduction

A US Department of Agriculture grant in the amount of $255,850 provided to Providence will, according to Mayor Brett Smiley be used to support food waste reduction programs in the city.

Mayor Smiley explained the city’s position saying:

“Providence is committed to taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact and foster a healthier, more resilient community. These grant-funded programs help us reduce food waste, expand access to composting in every neighborhood and ensure that our neighbors, local businesses and schools are engaged in the fight against climate change.”

Like businesses, nonprofits benefit from quality Logo Design, which can help support specific projects like these as well.

The largest portion of the grant, $84,540, will go to Zero Waste Providence for the education of the community on the advantages provided by composting and waste reduction.

The Rhode Island School Recycling Project will receive $73,550 for the expansion of Providence Public Schools food waste diversion efforts. North Providence will be the state’s first district where the composting of food waste will be carried out at all schools. Students at these schools will have the opportunity to participate in waste sorting and surplus food redistribution.

Providence Gardenworks will be given $54,200 to be used to provide supplies, compost bins and mentorship to community members. To grow the city’s drop-off network for food waste, $27,715 will go to Groundworks RI and $24,760 will be earmarked for the Center for EcoTechnology to coordinate with large food waste producers with an eye toward creating waste diversion strategies.
