National organization honors local heroes

Best Buddies Rhode Island is holding its first ever Champion of the Year awards this year in Providence.

Best Buddies is an international organization started by Anthony Shriver in 1989, which helps to provide opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The event is set to feature speakers Heath White and Shawn Fennell. White is also one of those who will be named a Champion of the Year, along with Dean Williams.

The day before, both honored men are scheduled to compete in the Myles Standish Marathon, which is a minimum two-person relay open to people of all abilities and challenges being held in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Guests will likely be treated to a cocktail reception, dinner, and then the presentations. Sponsorships are still available, ranging from $500 up to $10,000.

Many of those who plan to attend this event may also use this as a networking opportunity, since it is a chance to make connections with those who can either provide jobs or training to some of the clients served by Best Buddies. This may mean that several Providence Print companies will be approach to provide business card printing services.

The Champion of the Year gala is taking place on November 17 at the Omni Hotel. Tickets are $50 each or $90 for two. To find out updated information about the event, visit the Best Buddies Rhode Island official website.
