Gaspee Days 2024 brings event to Providence area

Once again, Rhode Island residents will be commemorating the burning of the British ship Gaspee in 1772 in an act of defiance prior to the official outbreak of the Revolutionary War.

A mere six miles away from downtown Providence, a number of Gaspee Days events will be taking place in Warwick. It will start this weekend with the May 18 Proclamation Day festivities that take place at Pawtuxet Park from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Also this month at Pawtuxet Park will be the Block Party from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm on Friday, May 24, and the Arts and Craft Festival from May 25 to 27 at Narragansett Parkway from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Moving into next month, the Warwick Symphony Orchestra will perform on Saturday, June 1 at Pawtuxet Park, and on Monday, June 3 there will be a Fireworks display in Salter’s Grove at dusk. Saturday, June 8 will be a full day of activities with Gaspee Day Parade kicking things off at 10:00 am. Also on the same day, a 1700s era colonial encampment will be set up from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm featuring a volunteer colonial militia.

The highlight of the monthlong celebration will take place at 4:00 pm on June 11 at Pawtuxet Park with the reenactment of the burning of the Gaspee. Other events will take place in nearby Cranston during the same period.
