Conference of Mayors to meet in Providence in three years time

Our city has garnered another feather in its cap, as it has recently been announced that city mayors from all over the US will be converging on Providence for the 2027 Conference of Mayors, the first such gathering here since 2009.

Providence Mayor Brett P. Smiley announced that the 95th annual get-together for mayors throughout the United States will be held here in June, 2027. The mayors in attendance will be from cities that have populations of 30,000 or more, making about 1,400 mayors eligible for the conference with an anticipated 200 or so of them attending the 2027 event.

Mayor Smiley explained the purpose of the annual conference, saying:

“Mayors in every city are tackling some of the nation’s most systemic issues with innovative, local solutions that have a tangible impact on the day-to-day lives of our communities. The USCM Annual Meeting brings together these mayors to collaborate, share ideas, and engage with federal leaders in Congress and the White House about the critical issues impacting our municipalities.”

It was in Detroit back in 1932 that the first Conference of Mayors was held. At that get-together, the 48 attending mayors successfully lobbied for local relief from the effects of the Great Depression.

In addition to the annual Summer Conference of Mayors held in various cities, each year sees a separate winter conference held in Washington, D.C.
