Text-based 911 service to be offered in Warminster

Warminster residents who have an emergency will now have a new way to reach help when they need it.

Officials form Buck’s County have made an arrangement with TeleCommunications Systems to provide ‘Text to 9-1-1’ capability with no additional cost to the county. All of the four major cellphone service providers (T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon) will be involved in the program.

The Commissioner Chairman Robert Loughery noted that more people are turning to mobile Forms of communication, and the county needs to keep up with the changing times. Offering this service will provide one way to do this.

It was further pointed out that Bucks County 9-1-1 dispatchers get around 2,600 calls a day and nearly two out of three of them are from a mobile device. It’s hoped that eventually, this new service will allow users to send photos and videos of their particular medical emergencies, which will facilitate additional and support from medical personnel, even before help arrives. Poster printing companies can produce materials that let the public know about this new service and how to make the best use of it.

Those who find themselves in an emergency situation where texting is the only choice available to them should not use abbreviations in their messages, should include the address of incident in the first text, be as brief as possible when answering questions, and if a voice call can be made later, they should let the telecommunicator know.
