A project has begun that will see people working for PECO engaging in an activity to make sure that power lines are safe and free from obstruction in Warminster and other communities.
The work crews are trimming branches and other vegetation that is either touching, or is growing close to, lines that conduct electricity. According to John McDonald, who is PECO’s vice president of technical services, this issue is believed to be responsible for as much as 20% of all power outages and can cause a lot of inconvenience to its customers.
McDonald further went on to say that the company’s program of vegetation control has lowered the incidence of outages related to tree branches by over 50% through the past five years.
The crewmembers who are working on the project have all been trained in arboriculture, and use techniques that meet the standards set by the National standards Institute A300 Standard. They assess the trees for health, and assess their proximity to overhead lines.
PECO customers are informed before any work is done in their local area. Direct Mail printing can be used by utility companies for this purpose.
The total coast for the project, which will cover over 382 miles of conduction equipment, has been estimated to be $2.8m. Those who would like to learn more are invited to visit the PECO vegetation management webpage.
