Labor Day weekend, to residents of Hanover, meant it was time for the 19th annual Chili Cook Off.
The event has long been a popular one in the city, but this year's promised to be the most popular and well-attended yet, with more than 450 tickets purchased in advance, compared to just 170 advance tickets purchased for the 2013 event.
Chili is the main draw of the annual event and more than 40 cooks entered the competition. Those who win the Hanover showdown are automatically entered into the International Chili Society's World Championships. Along with getting a free ticket to the international championships, winners of the chili cook off can also be recognized with certificates from Stationery printers.
Contestants are rated by both judges and people attending the cook off. There are three categories in which a cook can take home a prize: salsa, booth, or chili.
Jason Stambaugh, who ran the ‘Ooh This Porridge is Too Hot’ booth, took home the People's Choice award after his chili collected more than 400 tickets. The Good Samaritan Award went to Ed Hurgley and Big E's as the booth that collected $189 for charity. Taking second place in both categories was BOPS of Hazzard and Dan Arter. He also won the Last Cook Standing category.
Dirt Digger, from Mike Singelton, took the prize for best chili, while Chris West and the Wild West took home the prize for best booth.Get a Free Quote for Stationery
