Although the cabin looked good at night, under the cold light of day, it was revealed that it was pretty much falling apart. Some of the logs were rotting, there were large gaps between the logs, and the wall behind Santa's seat is filled with nests.
As volunteer Don Hamme put it:
"The cabin was being held together by paint and the roof."
To help fix up Santa's cabin, a members of several local volunteer organizations, who dubbed themselves the "Christmas Committee," swooped in with plans to repair and replace the cabin.
Organizations that are looking for help with repairs or with holiday decorations can use poster printing to get the word out and to enlist help from members of the community.
The holiday committee and Ben Adams, the former Mayor of Hanover, got to work looking for ways to build Santa a new cabin. One plan came in with a quote of $47,000. The local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Eagles stepped forward and offered to donate the money needed to build the cabin.
Construction on the new building began in September and should be completed by next Friday, November 23, in time for its unveiling after the Christmas parade.
