More than 70 men will be participating in the annual ‘Walk a Mile in Her Shoes’ fundraiser and event, sponsored by the local YWCA.
Although the event may seem a novelty, it is in support of a very serious subject, raising awareness about domestic violence. The goal of the walk is to help men become more aware of the issue of violence against women. Anne Acker, the director of the Safe Home program at the YWCA, told the Hanover Evening Sun that the event is:
"…a fun way to get the community talking about a difficult topic that needs attention."
To participate, men will put on a pair of heels in their size and walk from the Warehime-Myers Mansion, through downtown Hanover, and back again. The entire route is actually one mile. The YWCA could use local brochure printers to get men to sign up for the walk and to provide more information about the issue. Before the walk begins, the Hanover chapter of Soroptimist International will hold a dedication for a peace garden on the mansion's grounds.
Registration for the walk is $25 per person or $250 for a team of 10. Participants should register by August 13. The walk and dedication kicks off at 5:00 pm on August 15.
