Hanover High Schoolers raise money for a cause

Students at Hanover High School have been planning an event to raise money for pediatric cancer research in honor of childhood cancer awareness month. To reach the greatest number of people possible, they choose to hold their event during a home football game.

Last Friday, September 7, the Hanover HS Nighthawks played Greencastle-Antrim. That same night, organizers of the Mini-THON put together a raffle, sold T-Shirts, and asked for donations from attendees.

The organizers of the Mini-THON were inspired by the work done at other local schools such as Spring Grove and South Western. They dubbed the event a ‘Gold-Out’ game, as gold is the official color of childhood cancer. The students decorated the stadium with golden balloons and had volunteers paint faces. There were plans to toss yellow chalk in the air at kick-off, but the rain got in the way.

Organizers of fundraising events can use flyer printing to spread the word and to encourage people to get involved. Students at Hanover High have been working on putting together their fundraiser since the middle of the summer.

In the week leading up to the Gold-Out, the students sold around 150 T-shirts. During the event itself, they planned on selling T-shirts, headbands and necklaces. The goal for the fundraiser was to raise $1,000 and donations can still be made. Over the course of the school year, organizers for Mini-THON hope to raise $35,000.
