Halloween returns to state park in Hanover

The Friends of Codorus State Park are going to celebrate Halloween the only way they know how, with the return of Halloween in the Park.

Now in its 11th year, the event typically brings around 8,000 into the wooded park area for a range of Halloween-themed activities.

Kathy and Brad Bealing serve as co-chairs for the event. Speaking to the Hanover Evening Sun, Kathy Bealing described Halloween in the Park as "our little town secret," noting that she and her team transform the area, creating a magical feeling.

Towns that hold special events for various holidays regularly use brochure printers to create Booklets about the activities. One of the highlights of Halloween in the Park is Leroy the Lake Monster, who floats around in Lake Marburg. Leroy has been making an appearance in the park since 2009. The lake monster before him was damaged by Hurricane Sandy.

Another highlight of the celebration is trick or treating in the park, which starts at 6:00 pm on both days. Children dressed in costume are invited to visit 90 campsites, all decorated for Halloween. Thoose who are not interested in trick or treating can take a hayride, which travels along one of the park's trails, past around 40 displays created by area businesses, nonprofits, and members of the Friends group.

This year's event is scheduled for October 20 and 21. On the second day, there will be a costumed 5k run at 9:00 am and a pet parade at 11:00 am.
