A newly opened country market near Hanover aims to give shoppers a "warm, fuzzy feeling" by allowing them to purchase locally grown and produced foods.
The Harvest Barn Country Market, located on York Road in Straban Township, features a mix of products from area farms and producers. Owned by Paul and Susie Baumgardner and Sarah and Chad Knox (the son of Paul and Susie), the majority of the market's products come from the Baumgardner's farm in nearby Emmitsburg, Maryland.
Speaking to the Hanover Evening Sun, Paul Baumgardner noted that selling their farm-grown products in their own store allowed them to "control our own destiny better". He is hoping that the store will help to keep the farm open for years to come and that it will keep the farm in his family.
Along with the local produce, the market also sells meat, fudge, and candles. While 60% of the products are from the Baumgardner's farm, the other 40% come from five or six other farms in the area.
Stores that are planning on opening in an area can use banner printing to get the word out. Although the Harvest Barn Country Market is already open, a grand opening celebration is planned for the weekend of August 18.
The market is open six days a week, Tuesday through Sunday. It is usually open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, but opens two hours earlier, at 8:00 am, on Saturdays.
