Rose City Winter ice rink returns bigger and better

It won’t be long now before Portland's winter ice rink returns for a second year in what would appear to be the beginning of a popular annual event.

During the 2023 holiday season 20,000 skaters utilized the rink and this year Prosper Portland anticipated double that number. In expectation the city is increasing the size of the rink by 25 percent. This year ice skaters will 5,000 square feet of rink to glide on compared to last year’s 4,000 square feet.

Helping the public navigate large public events particularly during the holidays is made easier with help from a banner printing service.

Installation of the rink is being handled by Ice America and it will once again be located beneath the Morrison Bridge. The company’s Jacob Meunnich explained that generally it takes three to four days to fill an ice rink although it can take as little as 48 hours if necessary.

In addition to skating, this year an observation deck will be erected for those that would rather spectate than skate. Prosper Portland’s project manager, Amanda Park, explained that the goal is to create a holiday vibe downtown and the rink is the latest element, joining the city’s Christmas tree, shopping, carolers, food trucks, vendors and live entertainment.

The rink will open for skating November 16 and remain open until January 5.
