O-Tsukimi, moon viewing in Japanese, is a tradition of gazing at the full moon, and an event in September will celebrate it.

The local Portland Japanese Garden has scheduled its own moon viewing event to take place during the full harvest moon each year since 1990. A light vegetarian meal will be served early to start the evening, with catering by Obon Shokudo in the Atsuhido and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation Courtyard. A musical accompaniment will be performed by Yumi Torimaru, with Japanese lager and Joto sake available from Pfriem Family Brewers.

In the Kashintei Tea House, a candle-lit tea ceremony performed by Marjorie Yap-Tenney will be available for viewing, while outside guests are invited to stroll the lantern-lit garden. O-Tsukimi is one of only two events throughout the year for which the garden’s stone lanterns are lit, the other being O-Bon or Spirit Festival. Attendees can also take in the Flat Garden’s raked gravel design, which will boast a once-a-year checkerboard pattern known as ichimatsu, the alternating white squares being created by river gravel.

The locally celebrated O-Tsukimi takes place September through early October, and the Portland Japanese Garden Pavilion’s eastern overlook offers the ideal location for viewing the full moon with its accompanying views of Mount Hood and the city skyline. This year’s moon viewing will take place September 16 to 18 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tickets cost between $50 and $70.
