Findley Elementary School Zoya Shah here in Portland was announced as the winner of the Oregon Kid Governor program by Chery Myers, Oregan Secretary of State.
The Oregon Kid Governor program is a statewide election open to fifth graders with each elementary school permitted to enter one student. The Oregon Capitol Foundation supports the program to educate Oregon children on how their state government works. Thousands of fifth graders voted for their Kid Governor over the election season.
A panel of independent judges viewed 22 campaign videos, narrowing them down to seven that were then voted on by the state’s fifth graders. Zoya, who ran on a platform of creating metal health awareness for her fellow school age kids, received the most votes electing her the 2024 Oregon Kid Governor.

In her video Zoya presented a three-point plan to implement her platform which included creating awareness of mental health problems and normalizing and eliminating the stigma associated with them. Other parts of plan were the identification of anxiety and depression triggers and providing support and the tools to help kids cope.
The six runners up will comprise Zoya’s cabinet and will help her implement her platform while also working with her to move forward with their own platform issues.
The New Oregon Kid Governor will be inaugurated and begin her one-year term in January 2024.
