As of next week, Google workers will once again be commuting, albeit only for a maximum of three days per week. The other two days employees can choose working remotely or being an onsite worker as the tech giant enters a new “hybrid phase” next month in Portland, as well as at many other sites.
A letter directed at employees by the company stated:
"We believe that most of our teams collaborating together in the office for part of the week, and having the flexibility to work from home for the rest, is what’s best for our products, customers, people and culture."
Prior to the pandemic, Google’s Portland office had 80 employees and moved into a larger space near Pioneer Courthouse Square to accommodate anticipated future growth. However, the new offices were never fully occupied. Now, Google has 220 workers assigned to its Downtown Portland office, many of whom no doubt promote their position on their Business Cards.
One of the first businesses to reopen its downtown office space, Google’s return will likely to welcome news in the downtown area, where the number of workers has gone down by about 66% compared to pre-pandemic numbers.
The first day back for Google employees in downtown Portland will be April 4.
