The tax raise would add an additional $2 of tax to the current price of cigarettes, and this would bring the amount of tax that residents would have to pay to a total of $3.33.
A resident in Medford, Oregon, Raeanne Simper, commented on the potential tax increase. Speaking to Kobi5.com, she said:
“I might definitely try to cut back, cause that’s, two dollars a pack, that’s a lot, that’s like half the cost of a pack right now.”
Cigarettes will not be the only smoking products that will be affected by the tax increase; other products include cigars, snuff, and nicotine inhalant products such as vapor Pens and e-cigarettes. These types of products will be charged by the ounce or the millimeter and will also carry at least $2 of tax per product.
The additional taxes on the cigarettes and related products will go towards paying for things such as mental health services and treatment for those suffering from substance abuse or will go towards funding the Oregon Health Plan and cities throughout Oregon.
