The Rouge Gallery and Art Center in Medford is now presenting the exhibition ‘Beast of Lore: Woodcut Art by Liv Rainey-Smith’, which runs well into November.
The artist is based in Portland and creates woodcut printings of real and mythological creatures. Her works are inspired by medieval bestiaries and on how various societies view animals. Some of the creatures featured in this exhibition include pelicans, bats, and peacocks. Rainey-Smith makes sketches of her ideas, cuts them into wood, and then creates xylographic prints on paper or parchment using oil-based inks.
Taking place in conjunction with this exhibit is the continuing Fall Relief Printing Workshop. This is a three-day workshop that ends on November 4 and is taught by Nancy Jo Mullen. Students learn all aspects of creating woodcuts and create an original piece of work by the end.
The exhibition will probably interest some of those who work for Medford Print companies. Many of them will no doubt want to find out the background on the printing techniques used and to learn how to use them in their own projects.
