Coffee with a Cop, an event that allows individuals from Medford, Oregon, to talk with the police in their community, recently held an event with bilingual police officers to allow the Latino community to voice their concerns and opinions.
Over 30 members of the Latino Community in Medford attended the Café con Pan event at the Medford library. Concerns such as those about mental health resources and what happens during crises, the new Oregon House bill that is said to reduce police profiling and reduce the seriousness of possession charges, and police stop procedures were discussed at the event and answers were given by officers such as Sergeant Brent Mak and Deputy Chief Brett Johnson.
A student from Southern Oregon University who went to the event, Ricardo Lujan, spoke about the importance of understanding law enforcement’s point of view:
“I also want to understand their culture. It’s a two-way street towards everything.”
It was recommended by the officers at the event for individuals to attend the Citizen’s Academy in order to become more knowledgeable about how law enforcement operates. Two academies are held each year with one being in English and the other being in Spanish.
