Roger Lemstrom, a man located in Medford, Oregon, has created a sign saying “sanctuary” in four different languages and hung it in front of his home as an invitation for anyone who may feel threatened.
The sign is painted with the colors of the LGBTQ flag and has the word “sanctuary” written in Spanish, Arabic, English, and Hebrew. Lemstrom has several friends who are people of color and who belong to the LGBT community.
Lemstrom says this about opening his house to others, and explains:
“If anybody felt they were being attacked, harassed or under the threat of any sort of violence because of the color of their skin, their language, because of their sexual orientation, because of their religion, because of their disability - they could find sanctuary in my home”
Lemstrom has concerns about the safety of others who are facing discrimination, but admits he is also worried about his own safety due to what he is doing. However, he does not let that fear deter him from doing it. He is working with businesses in Medford that make products such as Signs, Banners, and T-Shirts.
He says he has received several inquiries regarding the sign throughout Oregon from people inspired by it and interested in printing their own, and is glad that people have shown such interest.
