While lichens may be familiar to many, they may not know they are a symbiotic organism made up of algae and either a fungi or cyanobacteria. A Medford area amateur naturalist finds this to be a fascinating combination, and he will be sharing his interest with the public during an outing planned for Rogue River Preserve.
Steeve Sheeby works with lichens, and has created species lists and other resource materials for several areas. He will be both guiding the walk and sharing his knowledge with the participants, and they will also have an opportunity to view several species through a microscope.
The hike will be over flat terrain and will proceed at a moderate pace, stopping to observe and identify lichens as it goes along. The organizers have advised the participants to wear long pants and tick repellent, and toilet facilities will be available.
