Scheels gets $8 million in incentives to come to OKC

Oklahoma City (OKC) council approved Scheels, a mega entertainment and sports store, setting up a location in Oklahoma City as well as a pay-for performance, public incentive package of up to $8 million.

Described as an amalgamation of Dick’s House of Sports, a Nordstrom and a Bass Pro, the OKC Scheels store will not be the state’s first; last year a 319,000 square foot store opened in Tulsa. The new store will be built just north of Memorial Road and west of Lake Hefner Parkway.

Utilizing local printing services is the easiest way to familiarize the public with how a city handles its budget and other financial matters

The Economic Development Program Manager for OKC, Joanna McSpadden explained the $8 million incentive package that was used to entice Scheels to build here this way:

“The incentive package is capped at 8 million dollars. It would be earned over a 10-year period, and basically, we’re utilizing a portion of the sales tax that’s generated at the store. So it’s a pay-for-performance method.”

Essentially the city will be sharing part of the sales tax revenue the store generates with Scheels.

City council has nearly dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s on the incentive package for the new 300,000 square foot store before groundbreaking can commence. Completion of the store is anticipated be as soon as 2028.
